Apple Offers Download for iOS 5.0.1 Beta 2 via Dev Center, OTA

Targeting developers enrolled with Apple’s $99 yearly program, iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 is being made available on the Apple Dev Center and via OTA update.

The release increments the previous beta (build 9A402) which arrived just days ago with fixes for battery drainage, a security fix for iPad, and more. The beta introduces new file attributes for managing data backups.

“iOS 5.0.1 beta 2 is now available on the iOS Dev Center,” reads an email sent out to developers this week. “You can also install the update over the air from devices that have iOS 5.0.1 beta installed.”

According to the company headquartered at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, Calif., “iOS 5.0.1 introduces a new way for developers to specify files that should remain on device, even in low storage situations.”

Since the current beta increments the previous one, this build also includes the changes delivered a few days back, such as fixes for the issues affecting battery life on some devices running iOS 5, fixes for bugs with Documents in the Cloud, improved voice recognition for Australian customers using dictation, and multitasking gestures for the iPad 1.

The two betas also contain security improvements, one of which is a fix for the iPad Smart Cover bug. iOS 5.0.1 no longer allows the iPad to go to sleep while in power-off mode by means of laying the Smart Cover back on its display.

The main role (so far) of iOS 5.0.1 is the battery drainage fix. Customers all around the world have reported issues with battery life, not only on the newly released iPhone 4S, but also on older-generation devices that have iOS 5 installed. Apparently iOS 5 has a few power management issues that iOS 5.0.1 promises to fix.

According to a statement provided by Apple earlier this week, iOS 5.0.1 should be released to the masses by the end of the month.

Wine 1.3.31 Full Review - Free download - Run windows application on linux

Wine is a miraculous software that aims to provide Linux users the “luxury” of running Windows software. There are other ways to run this type of software, like in a virtual machine, but doing so requires a powerful computer and a genuine Windows copy.

The work that goes into Wine to make Windows developed applications run under Linux is immense. The developers have the daunting task
of providing the required DLLs and a substitute to Windows kernel, everything wrapped in a compatibility layer. All of this work has one single purpose, to run games.

This is probably the last main barrier that makes Linux seem like an accessible operating system and which prevent its spread as an entertainment platform.InstallationWe usually recommend the stable version of a software and we always test a stable version, but in some cases the differences between the stable and the development are so big that we have to look at the latter.Being a development version means that it's not found in the official repositories. In order to get the latest version, in this case 1.3.31, users need to add the official PPA from the Wine developers.
Maybe we try fooling ourselves that we use Wine to run various “important” applications, but in fact the main use is to run games. Almost everything that can run in Windows has a counterpart under Linux distributions and in a lot of instances, the Windows version was launched after the Linux version, so games are the last redoubt.
There are two ways to install Wine 1.3.31, one by clicking on this link which will launch Ubuntu Software Center, if you're on Ubuntu. The other way is to manually add the proper PPA repo, in regard to your operating system, from HERE.

After adding the repository just run the following commands in a terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Usage

Wine provides a website which lists what applications that can be run through the software. Some work flawlessly, other with small problems and other are still far away from running under Wine.
If you have installed Wine correctly, by running the software you will open a configuration pane with six tabs which we'll describe below. However, we can't go into all the options as there are quite a few and we couldn't compile a guide of every single function, but we can underline the main options.

The first tab is Applications. Here, users can define what operating system Wine should emulate (although Wine is not an emulator per say), and it supports everything from Windows 2.0 to Windows 2008 R2. Loading one of these profiles will determine which specific system files Wine will use before launching a Windows application.

Users can also set their preferred applications to run on specific profiles so there is no need to change all the time between Windows versions.
The second tab is called Libraries. Unless users know exactly what they are doing, this part should be left alone. Let's assume that we want to run an application that requires a certain Windows file included in Wine, but at a different version. In this tab we can add a newer version of that file and override the existing one.

Graphics is the name of the third tab. This is a very important part of Wine as there are many Windows applications that will behave a lot better in a window than in full-screen. In the same time, if something goes wrong and the application freezes, users still have access to other parts of the operating system.
Besides window settings, there is also a Direct3D option, for Vertex Shader support, and one for the font size based on the screen resolution.

The forth tab is called Desktop Integration and it offers cosmetic features. There is little need for these settings, but it's good they are there, just in case.

Drives, the fifth tab, provides settings for drive mapping, making a little easier to ad
d a DVD drive, for example, inside Wine, without having to mount a folder as a drive.

The last tab, the sixth one, Audio, holds settings for various default audio drivers that are usually found in Windows systems, but for the most part the default one seems to work just fine.

Wine also comes with another feature that is called Winetricks which is basically a simple-to-understand wizard for installing and running new Windows applications.

The Bad

I'm not sure that we can even say anything bad about t
he massive undertaking which the Wine project is embarked on. Sure enough, the software is unstable and some applications that are reported as working will not start on certain distributions, or even on the same distribution, but on different computers. The problems are inherent because of the massive differences between the Linux and the Windows operating systems.

The Good
Wine is without a doubt one of the most complex pieces of software that can be found for the Linux platform and we can certainly say is a great tool to close the entertainment gap between Windows and Linux. The best feature is just its simplicity. Just install it and use it.

Conclusion

I can just imagine the frustrations that spawned the idea for this software. Wine is the best at what it does and it shows the most promise for the future. All we can hope is that each new upgrade will make it even better and that soon th
ough we won't feel the difference between the two operating systems.

EASIS Drive Check 1.1 -Review - Free download -hard drive diagnostics tool -

Furthermore, you can benefit from all the application’s functions without having to pay anything in exchange, as the software is distributed for free.

The main window of the application is composed out of two panels. The one situated on the lower side, present throughout the whole program, acts as a log recorder and shows all the information that is related to the program’s activities. The panel located on the upper side, that changes according to the options you select, initially displays all the drives (hard-disk, USB drive, external hard-disk, flash drive) that are connected to your computer.

Although the program is quite well organized there is room for improvement when it comes to the general look and feel of the buttons, as they are a little faded into the background and do not really stand out.

Easis Drive Check is structured as a “wizard”. All your connected drives along with their name and storage space are presented to you in the first window of the program. Selecting the drive you want to scan will automatically take you to the second window of the program, which offers you the possibility to choose one of the tests. The two available tests are “The S.M.A.R.T Value Request” and the “Each Sector Surface Test”.

The Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology or S.M.A.R.T., as you may know it, is a system designed to monitor computer hard-disks and predict any possible errors and failures. Thanks to all the sensors mounted on the hard disk, the system can offer you valuable information such as: temperature, read error rate, spin up time, power on hours, write error rate, and a lot of other data, as you can see in the screenshots at the end of the page.

However, this test is only available for internal hard drives or SSDs (the ones that offer support). Other media devices such as flash drives and / or external hard disks do not support this feature.

The „Each Sector Surface Test” verifies the read possibilities of your disk’s sectors. This is a relevant and useful test your storage media can be put through. Even if today’s generation of disks usually isolate and restrict from further use the bad blocks that are damaged, the test can be really useful, as it is able to identify and show you the exact amount of failures or damaged sections. This way, you will know how your storage device is performing.

Before the actual test can start, the application offers you the possibility to send your report via email. In order to send an email with your report, you need a valid SMTP host and username or you’ll get a „Connection timed out” error message in the program’s log panel.

The actual test window lets you view the actual progress of your scan. I should point out that the included timer is very accurate and Easis Drive Checker displays the exact time until your scan is completed. Unfortunately, I cannot give you an exact read speed as the program only displays the first and last sector of your drive.

However, as you would expect, the larger your storage device, the more time it takes for the software to scan it, but, your drive’s speed is also an important factor, the faster it is, the quicker you’ll be able to view your results.

The final window of the „wizard” will list the scan report. You can view the scan date, the complete name of your drive, your computer name and IP address, the number of sectors your drive contains and, of course, the number of sector errors. You can hope for a number that’s equal or close to 0, because, the lower the number of errors, the better.

You must remember that Easis Drive Check is not meant for fixing your disk errors even if they are found. The program is designed only to search for all the possible problems that your storage device might have or encounter.

Tested on a system running on Windows 7 x64, the program used a maximum of 8% CPU power out of a dual core processor and a maximum of 6 MB of RAM while scanning a hard disk for errors.

The Good

The application is free and thanks to its very accessible interface it requires very little computer experience to actually use it.

The reports and results presented by the program are easy to understand, the lower your error count, the better for your hard-drives health. Also, the drive checks performed by the software do not destroy or damage your stored data, the program will only perform a „read-only” scan.

The Bad

It would have been nice if the existing buttons were better defined, because they tend to get lost in the background, and, before you get used to them, you might start wondering if they're available or not.

The Truth

Easis Drive Check is a useful tool for analyzing your storage devices for errors. Due to the fact that it offers a decent analysis for a multitude of storage devices, and, it comes free of charge, you can try it and see how reliable is your disk. I am happy to say that none of the disks I have tested had any errors.
